The primary objective of the project were to investigate efficient multiple access schemes for communication satellites to interconnect broadband islands and support B-ISDN services, including the studies of compatibility of satellite technology andATM, interconnection of a variety of LAN technology, congestion control, error control, network management and relevant areas. Progress:Progress has been made to fulfil the objective in the following aspects:Study satellite multiple access protocols for network interconnection and ATM/BISDN related issues.Simulation studies of statistical nature of ATM terminal using advanced simulation software package - Block Oriented Network Simulator (BONeS). Co-operation with the European Research in Advanced Communication in Europe (RACE) project, particularly the RACE II CATALYST project by making contributions to the system development and making use of the CATALYST demonstrator for performance experiment and measurement purpose. The CATALYST demonstrator was claimed to be the first demonstration system in this research area for ATM over satellite to support broadband services . The experiment and measurement on the real system became very important to understand the nature of the satellite communications systems for broadband services. Contribution to the understanding of network interconnection by ATM for broadband services over satellite, the important role satellites playing in the evolution toward future Integrated Broadband Communications (IBC).Provision of support to research development and planning in the network research group.Provision of technical inputs to the initial proposal stage of the EPSRC/DTI Link project - Wireless ATM.The understanding of the nature of B-ISDN over satellite to enable research team in a better position to contribute to the research in the forthcoming Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) research programme in the area of satellites for high performance networksA number of papers have been published.The project has progressed well. The initial studies of the project have indicated that TDMA is the favourite choice for network interconnection with large earth station as a role of transit network. It also generates interesting research area of multiple access schemes for small station, mobile and transportable stations.
