Summary on Grant Application Form
(1) To study the effect of cathodic protection level on the corrosion fatigue behaviour of high strength steel used for tubular welded connections in jack up platforms. (2) The study will include the effect of fatigue life and fatigue crack growth. It will also examine the effect of metallurgical structure on resulting performance. The corrosion fatigue behaviour of high strength steels used in the form of tubular welded joints for jack up platforms will be studied. The work will include the development of an elementary service load history, fatigue testing and analysis of constant amplitude and variable amplitude corrosion fatigue crack growth tests on tubular welded T joints, an assessment of the effect of the cathodic protection level ( 850 mV or 1000 mV) on the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate, and a study of crack growth mechanisms. The influence of alloy microstructure on actual path selected by the resultant fatigue crack and on its crack growth rate will be determined. The study will provide fracture mechanics modelling of corrosion fatigue crack growth of high strength steels and some insight into the mechanism of corrosion fatigue crack growth.
