Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this research, it is intended to investigate the feasibility of recovering Co, Ni, Cr from mixed superalloy scrap without downgrading or loosing these critical metals, by a novel combined pyrometallurgical - electrochemical route. The mixed superalloy scrap will be melted with a flux for removing the oxide contaminents as a slag, and nitriding the melt to convert the Cr into Cr2N. The refined melt into anodes containing Co and Ni for a controlled-potential electrochemical co-deposition of a recyclable alloy, and Cr2N which can be collected as the insoluble anode sludge for the subsequent recovery of Cr by decomposition in vacuum at elevated temperatures. The role of other alloying elements and impurities in these processes will also be investigated.
