Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall objective is to produce a model of the dissolved air flotation process which can be used to design more efficient units. The first stage of the programme will be to study non flocculated systems, looking at grade efficiencies and the effects of bubble size concentration and the hydrodynamics, using dye injection techniques. High speed video will be used to examine behaviour in glass sided vessels. These base-line studies will be followed by the introduction of flocculated particle systems. Reproducible standard flocs will be prepared in a purpose-built unit and similar tests will be used to assess the behaviour of these particle aggregates. The effects of shear on these systems will be of special interest. In a parallel study to the main programme will be a set of very small scale experiments designed to examine specific mechanisms such as electrical effects.
