Summary on Grant Application Form
The object of the proposed programme is to develop a new type of surface-emitting laser in which the gain is distributed through the total length of the structure. This will be achieved by using a quarter wave Bragg mirror stack of AlAs and GaAs layers where each GaAs layer contains one or more InGaAs quantum wells which provide gain. Inversion will be obtained by injecting carriers across a vertical p-n junction in the form of a hollow cylinder. This junction will be formed by a deep Zn diffusion which will also introduce optical confinement as a result of diffusion-induced disorder. A further development of the device will employ quantum wells of two different widths to generate two emission wavelengths which can be differentially pumped in a controlled manner by using two separate annular electrodes on the p-type outer region.
