Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project brings together active researchers from both the power and control fields. The approach is hybrid in that it calls upon the expertise of the researchers in both fields and combines it in a way which promises success. This multifaceted approach brings together the areas of reactive power modulation, variable-structure control theory and power system analysis.Power systems are by nature non-linear, in part due to the variation in system topography and in part due to the inevitable nonlinearities of the power transmission network. The purpose of this project is to develop methods to enhance power system stability and ac transmission capacity. To this end, we will exploit the power of variable structure control theory for the control of reactive power modulation and to guarantee the required performance and stability. The devices used will be thyristor controlled series and shunt compensation or FACTS devices. The effectiveness of the control designs will be evaluated using the Electro-magnetic Transients Program. The theoretical properties of this approach will be investigated and a compilation of guidelines will be produced for use in industry and in the power community.
