Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme is designed to provide on-line real-time information for distillation column operators relating to the anticipation of disturbances and the detection of faults. The information will be based on a comparison between the effectiveness of a simulation based on an analytical model, neural network model or most likely a combination of an analytic model with a neural network data interpretation set.The fault detection system will be detected will be based on consistency between a predicted and observed operation of sets of variables and in addition checks will be made with a feed-back control actions, consistent with those anticipated by the model. The experimental work will be done in the UMIST Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant making use of the Ferranti Process Control System. The simulations will be based on 486PCs which will be able to read from and write to the measured and controlled variable database used by the Ferranti system for live displays and the generation of control algorithms.Once sufficient experience has been gained on the Pilot Plant unit with respect to the most effective on-line predictive simulator then a preliminary analysis will be made on the possibility of applying these techniques to more complex columns with data provided by Shell, Stanlow.
