Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent research work supported by SERC, industrial grants and studentships has been probing the role of molecular structure and thermodynamic properties in determining the processing performance of various particulate solids. Rigorous analysis of identified solid-state and hydration-dehydration phase transitions and, in some cases, full structural analyses have been compromised by limitations imposed by laboratory based x-ray diffraction equipment and inadequate single crystal specimens.Access to the SERC synchroton radiation facilities at Daresbury will permit:a) kinetic studies of solid-state and dehydration transitions using rapid data gathering with energy dispersive analysis, and a controlled environmental chamber.b) molecular structure analysis from high resolution powder x-ray diffraction spectra coupled with Rietvelt data refinement. In this way, facilities at Daresbury will enable our research programmes to progress understanding of important process induced transitions in powdered solids, and to generate much needed definitive molecular structural knowledge for those samples compromised by traditional single crystal x-ray analysis methods.
