Turbulent combustion involves strong and complex interactions between flow, chemistry and heat release, occuring over a wide range of length and time scales. Current theoretical models based on temporal or spatial averaging techniques can capture only the large-scale effects, and information on the small-scale interactions must be restored by mathematical modelling. This requires reliable statistical data which is difficult or impossible to obtain using currently-available experimental methods. Fortunately, sufficient computer power has recently become available for such data to be obtained by Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of suitable test problems in combustion. By accepting a restriction on the maximum problem size which can be tackled, DNS allows the principle governing equations to be solved without modelling. Results from early efforts in combustion DNS, carried out mainly in the USA, have already made a major impact on the quality of turbulent combustion modelling. The purpose of the present work is to establish a new national capability for combustion DNS using a recognised numerical method and a computer code that is already under test. The code will be developed and extended for the main task, which is to run and extensive programme of combustion simulations in order to generate a broad statistical database relating to flame speed, flame area, straining and curvature effects and the effects of turbulent transport in flames.
