Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project concerns a new concept for an improved design of friction spinning unit. The existing system has the advantage of high production rates, but the yarns produced are too weak to be fully exploited commercially. This is owing to the fact that the assembly of fibres and the insertion of twist occur as one operation. A theoretical study has shown that the two actions could be effected separately but simultaneously to provide a better yarn structure and much improved yarn strength. In addition, design optimisation would be simpler, because each of the relevant components could be designed for a specific action. The proposed work is a proof-of-concept programme. An experimental spinning unit will be designed and built in accordance with the theory and will be studied in comparison with yarns spun on the current friction spinning system and on commercial ring and rotor systems.
