Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is becoming important on both an industrial and analytical scale. By controlling the solvent, temperature and pressure, SFE can, to some extent, be made selective. Equally important, especially as regulations become tougher, is that supercritical fluids such as carbon dioxide offer environmental advantages, by replacing more toxic organic solvents. Metal complexes have been shown recently to be soluble in modified carbon dioxide, by carrying out supercritical fluid chromatography and extraction. For reasons of both process improvement and the environment, investigation of the use of supercritical fluids for the extraction and separation of metals is desirable for the benefit of metal processing industries.We therefore intend, firstly to exhibit the feasibility, as an industrial process, of metal extraction and separation from both liquids and solids using supercritical fluids. Secondly, the conditions for optimisation of such a process of (a) the fluid used, (b) the temperature and pressure, (c) the complexing agent used, and (d) the experimental technique will be studied. Thirdly, we propose to investigate the selectivity of extraction obtained by different complexing agents and by varying other conditions.
