|
The majority of artificial hip joints currently implanted comprise of metallic femoral components which articulate on UHMWPE acetabular cups. These joints operate with boundary lubrication and produce wear of the UHMWPE cup which limits the lifetime of the prosthesis. Recent research at Leeds University has demonstrated that acetabular cups manufactured wtih compliant layers can articulate with a full fluid film separating the bearing surfaces, so greatly reducing friction and wear. Long term simulator studies have also shown that these cushion form bearings prevent the generation of wear debris. The purpose of this LINK research project is to develop the cushion form bearing concept for prototype hip prosthesis, using combinations of medical implant materials. The tribological performance of these novel bearings will be investigated through a programme of extensive laboratory testing and simulator studies. Analysis of the results of these studies will allow the optimum design of cushion form bearing to be defined, and enable subsequent prosthesis development through animal and clinical trials to Depuy.
