Summary on Grant Application Form |
A collaboration involving Dr Hampshire (Durham University), Mr H Jones and Dr M Goringe (Oxford University). Dr Luc LeLay will take the postdoc position - he is an expert in the fabrication and characterisation of HIPped Chevrel Phase materials. Fabricating new Chevrel Phase Pb/SnMo6S8 composites with (rare-earth)Mo6S8 additions using a Hot Isostatic Press. Produce new materials with very strong magnetic and paramagnetic pinning sites distributed on the atomic scale and hence achieve high critical current densities above 20 Tesla. Measure: the electrodynamic and thermodynamic properties of these new materials as a function of temperature in magnetic fields up to 17 Tesla using D.C. transport, D.C. Magnetisation (Campbell's Technique) and specific heat facilities: measure the structural, microstructural and compositional properties using XRD and electron microscopy (using facilities at Durham and Oxford). Identify the mechanisms limiting the critical current of superconductors when they are doped with magnetic or paramagnetic elements. Fabricate wires using Cevrel Phase material and optimise their properties for use above 20 Tesla - these wires will be used to produce the first reported Chevrel Phase magnet.
