The primary objective of the ADEPT project is to validate, through the development of the practical application demonstrators, the feasibility of providing corporate strategic IT systems that support Concurrent Information Engineering across distributed enterprises. To achieve this aim, advanced distributed information management and decision making environments will be developed in the areas of Process Design and Corporate Management Information Support. The results of the project will be distributed widely over the UK Industrial and Commercial sectors. Progress: A Concurrent Information Engineering platform has been developed. The CORBA compliant ICL DAIS distributed computing software has been installed to provide the base for this platform and an Agent Negotiation Language has been developed to allow agents to negotiate with each other. A Service Description Language has been developed for specifying agent services and their interactions, and an architecture for agent construction has been specified. Two application demonstrators are in the process of being built and installed on the platform. The first, for BT, is a Bid and Quote Generation Procedure which provides integrated and consistent information across geographic and functional boundaries for all managerial levels. The second demonstrator, for ICI, consists of an engineering application investigating the management of change in industrial design, (Pressure Relief and Blowdown Calculations) and a commercial application (Economic Forecasting). In parallel, presentation and visualisation services are being developed to manage the interface between the users and the applications and to allow agent negotiation to be viewed directly. The project has established links with other Intelligent Systems Integration Programme activities such as the ENTERPRISE project and the CAKE project. A paper was presented at the 1994 BCS Expert Systems conference.
