Summary on Grant Application Form
Improvements in computational techniques, coupled with the computer hardware revolution, give us the opportunity at last to understand many structure/properties relationships from a fundamental point of view, by providing the power needed to model complex structures and microstructures sufficiently closely to deduce their expected behaviour. This proposal seeks to exploit this position in studies analysing interfaces, bonding charge density and stress in metal matrix composites and plasma spray coatings; also in ab initio prediction of electronic structure in superconductors, microstructures in metals and alloys, and configuration and liquid crystal properties of polymers. The requirements are the interconnection of existing computing resources (multiplying their usefulness), the phased upgrading of these resources, the provision of external network access accommodating the high volumes of data we now need to exchange with remote laboratories, and a Computational Modellin officer to assist with system maintenance and coding.
