Summary on Grant Application Form
As a result of a recent project carried out in this laboratory, the broad pattern of behaviour associated with surfactant lyotropic liquid crystals in non-aqueous polar solvents is now becoming clear and a knowledge of the factors which influence the relationship between the phase behaviour of surfactant lyotropic liquid crystalline solutions and the surfactant structure and shape is emerging. In this proposal, we aim to use and build on this knowledge so that an extensive range of lamellar liquid crystalline phases can be formulated which are stable over the temperature range 5-100+C using a range of surfactants and additives. The lubricating behaviour of these lamellar phases will then be tested using various friction and wear experiments so that a relationship can be evaluated between the structure of the lamellar phases (determined using optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, nmr) and their lubricating properties. We hope that these systematic experiments will enable us to be in a position to formulate novel lubricants which are economically viable and environmentally friendly.
