Summary on Grant Application Form |
In a previous SERC programme, filler coating interactions have been investigated and the effect of coatings on processability and mechanical properties of filled polyethylene examined. Some conclusions have been drawn with respect to the effect of type and level of filler. A test programme designed to explore coated filler/processability/and property interactions has been established. In the present proposal, it is intended to carry out this programme for a number of selected filler/coating polymer systems, in order to develop a broader understanding of the properties of filled systems, generate guidelines for coating selection, and produce models to correlate filler/coating variables with mechanical properties. Particular attention will be given to toughness enhancement. In order to confirm some initial findings, with respect to coating length for example, certain novel coatings will be investigated. To support the above programme, it will be necessary to develop a number of new techniques. It is hoped to use FTIR to identify the coating in processed samples, to use surface analysis techniques to analyse the locus of failure after impact and tensile testing, and to develop methods to assess filler dispersion in highly filled thermoplastics.
