Summary on Grant Application Form |
Studies so far have defined relationships between undercooling, spacing and growth velocity and temperature gradient which current models do not predict. Modelling has shown that the most comprehensive model is not satisfactory because it assumes a planar interface solute distribution and steady state growth. The boundary element method has been used for the first to produce these results. It is proposed to use this technique to analyse non steady state growth at a pseudo planar interface. The diffusion field will be solved for converging and diverging flakes as a function of time at constant growth velocity. A simple concave interface shape will be assumed initially but more realistic shapes will be considered eventually. It is hoped that the modelling will be sufficiently quantitative to be able to predict the observed kinetic relationships.
