The project aims to determine the influence that point defect energetics have on the microstructural evolution of a range of electronic ceramics by employing the unique combination of transmission electron microscopy and atomistic simulation calculations. The recent dramatic increases in computational power mean that atomistic calculations of large defect ensembles and their energetics in the perfect lattice, on a surface or grain boundary and adjacent to planar defects such as stacking faults, are now possible. Similarly, complex microscopy images can now be generated from atomic coordinate and other input data and directly compared to the experimental images. The materials we will consider are AIN, BaTiO3 and ZnO. Each has important applications in the electronics industry and for each, a critical processing parameter is the control of impurities or dopant ions to obtain the desired properties. This study will have three benefits. First, a number of important materials processing problems will be addressed. Second, the innate power of our combined theoretical and experimental procedure will be demonstrated. Third, the basic materials science that underpins the influence that point defects have on microstructural evolution will become clearer.
