We propose a programme of fundamental magnetic measurements on pearlitic steels of very well controlled microstructure and composition in order to determine the origin of anisotropy observed in the magnetic properties of plastically deformed high strength constructional steels. Measurements of coercivity, permeabilities and remanence will be made both in-situ during straining and in the unloaded materials in order to distinguish effects of elastic and plastic strain. Structural characterisation will be carried out to relate the magnetic anisotropies to the material properties in order to provide an understanding of the effects at a microscopic level. The data will be used to improve significantly models of the magnetisation processes in magnetic flux leakage and the indication formation process in magnetic particle inspection.
