|
The objective of this proposal is to prepare liquid-crystalline carbohydrates that have rod-like structures and to investigate their thermotropic and lyotropic properties. The materials will contain a wide variety of sugar residues, and their properties will be related to molecular architecture. The biological properties of these materials will also be investigated with a view to linking them to their liquid crystal activities. The non-ionic surfactant and detergent properties of the materials will also be investigated.
