Summary on Grant Application Form |
This study on microstructure of polycrystalline thin films will concentrate on influence of background gas and material reactivity, development of film texture, and the influence of early growth phases, comparing with existing models where possible. Films of a range of thicknesses will be deposited under carefully controlled and clean UHV conditions, for a range of materials with similar, suitable melting temperatures but varying reactivates. These will be characterised by electron microscopy, x-ray diffractions, and (for early growth phases) XAFs, using new developments in instrumentation at the SRS for texture assessment. Particular concerns will be to identify the extent to which existing models may be developed to account for residual gas effects, and the dependence of texture on incident beam direction; and to identify how early growth phases affect subsequent film growth.
