This proposal is concerned with the synthesis of new bis-tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) macrocycles (with macrocyclic rings designed to bind alkali metal cations and softer transition metal cations including Ag+, Cu2+, Cu+, Ni2+, Pt2+ and Pd2+) and prepare associated metal complexes. In addition it is proposed to synthesise a series novel extended DMIT metal complexes based on a novel dithiolate recently synthesised by us. These novel TTF macrocycles and extended DMIT metal complexes are anticipated to have interesting conducting properties and large, third order, nonlinear optical properties. The solid state structures and properties (electrical conduction, NLO properties thermopower and magnetic susceptibility) will be investigated through established collaboration and correlation of these properties with the structural variations we will make will allow the design of new materials with further improved properties.
