The aim of this proposal is to develop immobilisation methodologies for biosensor devices which are compatible with integrated circuit technologies. The current lack of compatibility between laboratory immobilisation methods and typical bulk manufacturing techniques has been cited as a major reason for the failure of biosensors to reach the market place.We aim to expand our preliminary success in developing a range of polymers which are suitable for modification with enzymes and yet can be cast from non-aqueous solvents. These will be based on poly(methyl methacrylate) which is the polymer most widely used as a photoresist in microcircuit fabrication. A systematic approach to the synthesis and modification of these polymers is proposed to produce high enzyme activity and loading, long term stability and appropriate manufacturing capability.
