Summary on Grant Application Form |
Electron beam lithographic and reactive ion etching techniques will be developed and used to pattern a range of magnetic thin films and multilayers. The magnetic systems studied will include sputtered and evaporated multilayers, granular and alloy films. Elements of various sizes and shapes will be defined on both polycrystalline and epitaxially grown material. The magnetic domain structures in the patterned films will be studied by transmission electron microscopy and compared with those in the corresponding continuous films. In addition the way the domain structure changes under an applied field will be investigated. The project will provide novel information on the dependence of magnetic properties as the spatial dimensions of the structures are reduced; it will also provide valuable data directly relevant to the performance of potential new sensors and devices with emphasis being given to materials showing a giant magnetoresistance.
