Summary on Grant Application Form |
To develop a method of predicting the response of a 3 D body floating in waves and in the presence of a small mean current, including viscous effects. To validate the model against theoretical and experimental results. To apply the model to a TLP case study. To produce software and user manual capable of use by informed operator for industrial applications. The aim of the project is to develop a purely theoretical method for calculating the vsicous damping and response for a structure floating in waves in the presence of a small mean current, at the wave frequency. The method will be applicable to three dimensional bouyant structures, and the viscous damping forces will be calculated in all six degrees of freedom. The method relies on the flow separation from the surface of the structure being well defined, but it capable of dealing with bodies with sharp edges, roundededges or edges supporting bilge keels. The method will be founded on well proven techniques which match viscous discrete vortex based methods with state of the art potential flow boundary integral method, including second order panel method capable of accomodating a small mean current. The code will be developed to a level at which it may be used by informed operators for industrial applications.
