Summary on Grant Application Form
1. To develop a robust numerical analysis of second order hydrodynamics, which is not subject to the problem of irregular frequencies. 2. To apply the work to a case study TLP, and to interpret the results in the context of design procedures. 3. By convergence studies and comparisons with other available data, to establish the reliability of the analysis and improve confidence in the worldwide database on TLP hydrodynamics and in the use of second order analysis. This project aims to investigate three questions concerning the reliability of computations of second order diffraction effects; the range of applicability of second order theory; and difficulties in the implementation of second order analysis in design practice. The project is based on earlier research by the investigator into the computation of second order wave diffraction and radiation. It will extend this by tackling the practical limitation of irregular frequencies and developing guidelines on best practice for meshing the body and free surfaces. The problem of interpolating quadratic transfer functions will be investigated, making use of analytical solutions for groups of cylinders. Results will be interpretated in the design context of the case study.
