Summary on Grant Application Form |
An experimental investigation will be conducted to provide data to predict the viscous damping of TLP hulls. A special tank will be constructed, 2.5 m a 2.5 m x 1.8 m deep, and bodies up to 250 mm in diameter will be tested. The research will involve measurements of damping at low KC numbers and high Beta values for circular and rectangular cross section cylinders. Finite aspect bodies will also be tested to determine the contribution of viscous damping from free ends. In the case of rectangular cylinders, the influence of corner radius on damping will be studied. Flow visualisation will be used to assess the state of the boundary layer flow and to study the development of three dimensional Honji type instabilities. Also conditions for the onset of separation will be investigated. The influence of blockage on damping will be studied as part of the investigation. Using the results obtained above, the damping of a typical TLP hull will be predicted. This will then be compared with the measured damping on a model of the hull.
