The development of low temperature plasma polymerisation coupled to post-pyrolysis or the use of a hot stage (<500C) for the deposition of hard ceramic films to provide durability to cutting edges. Understanding of the processes involved. The starting point will be deposition of SiO2 coatings from HMDSO/02 with extension of TiCN from HMDZN and other potential systems. The relationship between coatings structure, plasma conditions and their wear resistance will be examined. Molecular structure of these amorphous coatings will be examined by ToF SIMS/XPS. Wear mechanisms will be studied using electron microscopy.
