Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose a detailed structure at a microscopic level of particulate dispersions under shear and elongational flow. Experimental investigation will be made using light scattering and small angle neutron scattering in a novel apparatus, enabling structural information to be determined along the 3principal axes. Computer calculations will be made on hard sphere models, involving up to 104 particles, which should closely simulate the experimental conditions. The simulations and experiments will also be extended to systems containing particles and polymer molecules which more closely resemble dispersions encountered in engineering processes, eg paper coating.
