1. To collect data simultaneously from wind and wave sensors on an offshore platform in storm conditions using intelligent data loggine at high sampling rates. 2. To analyse these data by various methods in the time domain. 3. To develop statistical models for the prediction of extreme maxima of water particle kinematics and wind gust in terms of joint probabilities. Two laser wave height sensors will be installed at the North Alwyn platform to compliment the existing one. Three sensors will enable wave direction and directional spectra to be determined. Data from all three sensors and the existing anemometer and wind direction meter will be connected to a new PC based intelligent data loggin system, which will allow simultaneous measurements of wave height and direction, and wind speed and direction to be recorded at high sampling rates in storm conditions. The sampling rate will be adjusted so that wave profiles can be discerned and wind gust behaviour measured. Data will be collected over two winters, and analysed with both proprietory and specially developed software. Most of the analysis will be in the time domain and directed at a better understanding of the statistical characteristics of, and relationships between, wave and wind in extreme conditions. Various analyses will be undertaken in the time domain in the context of fluid loading. Finally a case study will be undertaken using a simple jacket/platform FE model to compare structural response under DEn Guideline environmental parameters with structural response under newly derived models.
