Summary on Grant Application Form
The intention is to establish a new Environmental Flow Research Centre (EFRC) at the University of Surrey. The work of this Centre will encompass a wide range of problems within the general area of fluid flow and effluent dispersion in the world's atmosphere and oceans, specifically those problems which embody significant effects of density stratification.Subsequent to relocation of National Power's entire Stratified Flow Laboratory, to a completely refurbished Fluid Dynamics Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the first major task is to undertake comprehensive re-commissioning of both large flow rigs (a wind tunnel and a towing tank). This will involve some unification and enhancement of instrumentation systems to match those already in place in the Department and will take up to a year. We then wish to enhance the facilities further by the addition of the 'second half' of a complete Particle Image Velocimetry system to allow field measurements of velocity (and, perhaps, concentration) and to prepare both large rigs and all instrumentation for specific research tasks. This will require a second year. Simultaneously, we wish to develop an effective management structure for the Centre and to prepare and submit a range of Grant and Contract proposals to Research Councils, the CEC and Industry.
