Adopting a context bound approach to the consideration of human factors issues in the design of safety critical systems, this project is investigating the process of designing geographic data for Solid State Interlocking, a software system which controls the safe movement of trains within a section of railway.Recommendations, guidelines and software tools will be produced with the objective of improving the efficiency of this design process. Progress:An initial model of the data design process was developed using Hierarchical Task Analysis. Various methods of Cognitive Task Analysis are being explored as a means of further elaborating the more detailed programming components. An error analysis is in progress and the task simulation software is in preparation. In addition an on-site experiment is being conducted which requires engineers to complete a controlled design task. Their performance is video recorded, allowing subsequent analysis, and data relating to individual differences (e.g. cognitive ability) is gathered. This is proving to be an important component of both the cognitive task analysis and error analysis, and will also provide a useful reference point when considering the results of forthcoming laboratory studies. Areas for consideration at this stage will include: fatigue/ vigilance; visual programming techniques; the importance of different mental models within a safety critical framework; individual differences; cognitive simulation; and the design of training/ support documentation.
