Summary on Grant Application Form |
Previously multiaxial fatigue studies of metals in air have shown the importance of the orientation and duration of Stage I and Stage II crack growth phases. No information is available to designers on the added complication of environmentally-assisted fracture.A fundamental investigation is proposed to study the effect of various biaxial surface stress states on environmentally-assisted, surface-defect growth. In particular the orientation and growth of surface Stage I and Stage II cracks will be studied in relation to the critical cyclic stress levels. The effect of an aggressive environment on this transition in two materials ( a high strength and a structural steel), will permit three-dimensional plots of lifetime (and appropriate microstructural short crack growth data) versus biaxial surface stress state, versus environmental conditions (including both anodic and cathodic controlled conditions) to be constructed.
