Summary on Grant Application Form
This study will investigate the ability of lubricants to form very thin films in contacts and the rules governing the formation of such films. Two aspects will be considered: (i) what happens when films are so thin that the continuum assumption used to derive existing film thickness law breaks down, (ii) what happens to film thickness in the mixed-lubrication regime when the surface roughness is comparable to or greater than the film thickness. The study will be largely experimental in nature and based on a recently developed method of measuring the thickness of very thin lubricant film, down to the nanometer range, in contacts. The finds will however, be compared and interpreted in terms of existing theoretical analyses where the latter exist and will also involve some modelling work.
