Summary on Grant Application Form
The basic premise of the modelling is that at service voltages electrical breakdown occurs as a result of an accumulation of local damage. Analytical expressions relating the amount of damage in a single local event to the local field can be derived for specific mechanisms, and a time for channel formation determined on the basis of a required critical quantity of damage. The evolution of the pre-breakdown structure can only be followed by a computational calculation on the regions of the insulation which form channels in a given time interval. A primary aim of the proposed programme is to determine the relative importance of space charge and material properties in determining the breakdown structure and time to failure. Ultimately it is hoped to establish quantitative behaviour patterns for different breakdown mechanisms in filled and laminate systems.
