The primary objective of the project is to develop mesh adaption procedures for bulk and sheet forming operations which invariably involve elasto-plastic material deformation at finite strains and frictional contact behaviour. As a prelude to the introduction of appropriate error estimators an enhanced strain solid element will be developed to model the plastic incompressibility conditions arising in bulk forming and for double-sided contact in the blankholder regions of sheet forming operations. Two error estimators of the a posteriori type will be considered: The standard version based on the stress error in the energy norm will be reformulated to include issipative processes and an error estimator developed based on the plastic dissipation functional and the rate of plastic work. A posteriori error estimation of the residual type will also be considered. Adaptive mesh generation, based on these error estimators, will be undertaken by an unstructured (Delayney) approach, considering both triangular and quadrilateral meshes. Considerable attention will be given to the development of appropriate transfer operators to allow mapping of variables to successive meshes in a consistent manner, which preserve equilibrium, compatibility of strains and displacements and satisfaction of the constitutive laws. The applicability of the solution procedure will be assessed by the simulation of practical forming problems at each stage of the work.
