Summary on Grant Application Form
The planned research proposes to use a novel experimental technique to study the development of turbulent spots during bypass transition. Thermochromic liquid crystals will be used to provide data on the instantaneous location and extent of the turbulent spots over the entire surface of a heated plate. A preliminary investigation of using this technique has been completed in preparation for this proposal. The proposed research will develop the technique so that the internal structure of the turbulent spots may also be investigated. The technique will be validated by applying it to the study of turbulent spots that are artificially created. The technique will then be used to examine the formation and growth of turbulent spots under the influence of free stream turbulence and pressure gradient with the aim of developing a model of the formation and interaction of turbulent spots which is applicable to bypass transition.
