Summary on Grant Application Form
The research will investigate new methods for the ultrasonic inspection of glass-fibre reinforced polymer composites. These will be non-contact and will use a pulsed laser for ultrasonic generation. Experiments will determine the energy and wavelength best suited for generation at composite surfaces, while minimising damage to the surface. Detection will be accomplished using a high frequency microphone. Once the transduction system has been optimised, it will be scanned over the surface of fibre-reinforced composite samples to image defects caused by impact damage. A C/D scan approach using longitudinal waves will be used. Images formed by the system will be correlated to the actual defects present. A final phase will use the new ultrasonic system to investigate the link between the presence of certain defects, caused by impact damage, and a drop in the compressive stress of the material.
