The project aims to show that high-power, low-speed, permanent-magnet machines can be constructed from simple low-cost parts. The wide variety of machine specifications can be met using a common set of module designs. Modules are used in large numbers and so can be cheaply mass produced. The principal application is in wind turbines where the machines would be used as direct-coupled generators bringing benefits in terms of reduced cost and improved energy output. The principal tasks are a design of suitable modules, assessment of electrical and thermal performance, assessment of measures for reduction of noise and vibration and the assembly, test and demonstration of a realistic trial machine.
