Summary on Grant Application Form
Specimens will be developed to investigate static and fatigue strength under interlaminar tensile stresses and combinations of interlaminar tension and shear by initially utilising curved specimens subject to three and four point bending. Tests on specimens with dropped plies will be carried out to investigate the interaction between overall interlaminar stresses and high local stress concentrations. The experimental work will provide understanding of the fundamental mechanisms responsible for failure and data for correlation with predictions.Models will be developed in order to establish a methodology for predicting the through thickness static and fatigue strength able to deal with straight/curved geometry, constant/tapered thickness and out-of- plane/in-plane loading. The work will be applicable to a wide range of composite structures, allowing more efficient design whilst reducing the risk of costly and potentially dangerous structural failures.
