Summary on Grant Application Form |
The objective of this proposal is to study and model, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and optical anemometry, the deposition of the particulate materials upon porous cylindrical surfaces. This work is directly applicable to the design and operation of ceramic candle filters, one of the most promising technologies for high temperature high pressure clean up of gases from pressurised fluidised bed combustion or coal gasification plant. This is an essential ingredient to clean coal technology. The work will be carried out in a three year programme involving the prediction of particulate deposition using an existing CFD code (FLOW3D). Experimental work using non-intrusive LDA and PIV will be undertaken to validate the CFD modelling. The successful outcome of the project will be to identify a method, validated by experiment, for using CFD to predict the deposition of particulate material upon candle filters. In addition, relationships will be derived to predict the deposition patterns of particulate material upon filters, in terms of a particle size distribution and deposit thickness, for three gas flow configurations.
