Summary on Grant Application Form
Experimental investigation into the changes in turbulence structure and skin-friction drag over the boundary-layer wall oscillating in spanwise direction will be carried out in a wind tunnel using hot-wire anemometry and flow visualisation. The purposes of this investigation are firstly to follow up the recent direction numerical simulation results which indicated that the turbulent skin-friction drag is reduced by up to 40% over the oscillating will, and secondly to study the turbulence-energy production mechanisms in the boundary layer in the light of new evidence which will come out of the experiments. An optimisation of the frequency and amplitude of the oscillatory motion will also be conducted with a viewpoint of industrial applications.
