The proposal is to use the hierarchical finite element method to study the free vibration and forced response of conical sandwich shells. This method has significant advantages over the conventional finite element method when applied to this type of structure, and the presented proposal builds upon previous Southampton work concerning cylindrical aircraft fuselage structures. A supporting experimental programme will be implemented to validate the theory for a number of conical panels. This work has direct relevance to the prediction of acoustic fatigue in the fuselage panels of future advanced STOL aircraft: the prediction of the natural frequencies and mode shapes of such structures by using conventional methods is both costly and unreliable. Although pre-stresses due to pre-loads and thermal effects will not be considered, the present proposal will provide a firm foundation upon which future studies of these effects may be based.
