This programme seeks to develop a low temperature route to thick electrolyte Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 films for use in solid oxide fuel cell planar stacks. The project will require the development of a tailored molecular precursor strategy to molecular non-hydroscopic, volatile Ce and Gd metal alkoxides and -diketonates. Of paramount importance to the success of this project is the initial design and synthesis of a select range of Ce and Gd molecular precursors and their characterisation by spectroscopic techniques. The second and concurrent stage will be the evaluation of these molecular materials via vapour pressure, mass transport, and TGA/DTA studies. Prime requirements are a vapour pressure high enough to allow good deposition rates, and a suitable decomposition and mechanism to allow the ligands to be removed resulting in a clean carbon free film. Finally, conversion of selected molecular precursors via the use of atmospheric pressure CVD to yield a porous thick mixed Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 electrolyte film. These films will be evaluated by a range of techniques including SIMMS, SEM and impedance spectroscopy with Professor B C Steele. The evaluation of the physical properties (via a collaboration with the Materials dept and the IRC) of the electrolyte thick films and exploitation of their industrial utility as SOFC's is an important fundamental goal of this project.
