The present high performance brushless drives utilise pulse-width modulated (PWM) controlled voltage source inverters which suffer from high levels of loss when switched at the high frequencies necessary to achieve good system performance and reduce audio noise. PWM with high switching rates also gives rise to a large amplitude electromagnetic (EMI) emissions at fixed frequency bands. The proposed research is to develop resonant elements which ensure that the power semiconductor switches only change state at zero voltage or zero current and thereby remove switching loss. Alternative, pulse density modulation (PDM), control schemes will be investigated which are suited to the resonant converter operation and lead to lower EMI as a consequence of a more even spectral distribution of the emitted electromagnetic noise, whilst improving systems response by allowing higher frequency operation. The focus of the work will be towards battery powered vehicle applications where high efficiency and high performance are essential requirements and the project is fully endorsed by two industrial collaborators involved in electric vehicle drive systems.
