Summary on Grant Application Form |
There are several rather broad objectives which may be summarised as follows; all of which will be achieved using optical probing techniques:a) Obtain a detailed understanding of homogeneous alignment of the simple nematic and the more complex but still uniaxial smectic A phases using gratings with differing pitch and depth. (b) Obtain a detailed understanding of the tilted alignment of both nematic and smectic A phases using a combination of grating and evaporated SiOx or rubbed polyimide aligning layers. (c) Use a combination of gratings, that is two orthogonal gratings on the same substrate, to give possible bistable nematic alignment, examining a range of grating combinations. (d) Examine the influence of grating groove profile upon the alignment of nematic and Smectic A phases. (e) Study as fully as possible the alignment of the smectic C* phase in all the above geometries.
