All anisotropic species orient themselves in ceramic and metal injection moulding be they macromolecules, particles, fibres, whiskers and platelets. In conventional moulding the orientation pattern is different throughout the body and subject to minimal intervention. We now know that orientation of the organic vehicle leads to dramatic contractility or dilation in different parts of the body when relaxation takes place. This means the particles are not uniformly spaced at the start of sintering and defects will result however slowly the binder is removed! Second phase inorganic dispersoids, added for toughening follow a similar pattern in shear flow. This obstructs sintering and prevents shape retention. Anisotropic particles, such as those calcined, behave in the same way leading to anisotropic shrinkage and possibly favourable arrangements for grain growth. We intend to study and control orientation at each level using, as our principal intervention, the SCORTEC multi-live feed injection moulding process developed at Brunel University for this very purpose.
