Summary on Grant Application Form
Low pressure growth of diamond has promised practical access to the fantastic properties of diamond. However, the rate of growth of high quality diamond is still slow in spite of the many practical avenues that have been explored. This computer modelling project will use ab initio total energy methods to tease out the fundamental mechanisms of growth (and graphite etching) from the welter of possibilities that have been conceived so far (for C:H, C:F and C:H:O systems). Understanding these mechanisms (and the consequences of modifying them) should guide development of growth methods. Although diamond has high carrier mobility at room temperature, the low carrier concentration frustrates attempts to use it. With ab initio methods it should be possible to identify ways of making dopant levels shallow and hence to increase the carrier concentration at room temperature.
