Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme involves two interrelated activities: (i) the work at Cambridge aims to develop a physically-based internal state variable model for flow stress in single and multi pass hot deformation. The state variables influencing flow stress should provide part of the microstructural input to model the kinetics of the inter-pass recovery and recrystallisation. (ii) The work at Sheffield will comprise an experimental investigation of stress-strain and microstructural behaviour under constant and varying conditions of strain rate and temperature, to provide a database for validation of the model formulation. The experiments will be carried out on Al-1%Mg and type 316 stainless steel in several phases: (a) to assess the validity of applying the deformation model to recovered structures in a second deformation and of applying a law of mixtures to partially recrystallised structures, (b) to determine the effect of variable deformation conditions on the as-deformed microstructures, (c) to quantify the consequences on the kinetics and scale of the static microstructural changes. This research will provide significant new information irrespective of the specific interaction with the model development.
